They came from far and wide (again) – LISF 2014
The 6th, yes it’s the 6th !! London Ice Sculpting Festival that Icebox has produced and been involved with, since the foundation, by our colleague Carol Cordrey in 2008.
The very first, in 2008 was held in the gardens at the Natural History Museum and attracted, 6 teams and a large number of visitors, estimated to be around the ten thousand mark. For the last 5 years have been held at Canary Wharf, organically growing throughout the estate and the last two years the main International ‘ice off’ competitions held on the Wood Wharf event space. This year saw numbers reaching in excess of 55,000 visitors to Wood Wharf during the two and a half day event over a weekend in mid-January.
This year was another great success, hosting 10 International teams, welcoming new teams from Ireland and Poland and the return of our Africa (Togonese) friends, Steve and Mario. Our own Anne- Marie Taberdo was in the UK team, winning the Public Choice vote, where approximately one thousand members of the public, visiting the festival, hose the UK sculpture as their winning choice.

The event has now evolved and developed into a real Festival atmosphere, with street entertainers, a really interesting food market, live performances from Flame OZ, the opportunity to have a go at ice sculpting in our master classes and all made appropriately ‘chilled and cool’ with the fantastic sounds from DJ Yvan known as Healer Selecta . With the winter sun over the weekend, the thousand s of visitors soaked up the atmosphere, enjoyed the whole ice cool vibe! People were trying out alpine style, organic food from the stalls and enjoying mulled wine or winter warmers at our bars which were provided by the wonderful Creative Bars guys, or visiting the retail malls and numerous restaurants inside the Canary Wharf estate.
The thing about this Festival is that you cannot see this scale of ice sculptures, the two ton blocks, the skilled international artists anywhere in the UK, apart from this one weekend, now established as part of the London Event calendar in January.
This year we have taken control and ownership of the event under our Ice Box Entertainments, Ice Festival s-Ice Rink-Ice Pop-Up Ice Bars event arm and plan to expand the event in future years with regional preliminary competitions, in early January. We have also taken the opportunity to rename the event The London International Ice Festival.
It’s on the up, we can only get bigger and better, with more attractions, an urban ‘foodie’ street market, increased international teams taking part, evening entertainment features and we may be bringing it to a City near you in the future, watch this space!
